it was lola's birthday yesterday. my lola on my father's side. i do not know her age. though i know that she has aged well. she may not be the luckiest in terms of health, but she maintains a healthy attitude in life. there is strength in her frail old body that i cannot fathom. last year lolo died. there is pain in her heart i dare not imagine. pity it is, that lolo died just a couple of months before i got assigned to the US. most of the family was together during lolo's funeral - fractured bonds as it may be. maybe it's a reason why i keep putting off the idea of visiting them for later. maybe all this time i still think lolo just went back to california, that's where his home is after all.
i called lola on her birthday, the moment i woke up. that's all i could do. i did not send for presents for i know that it would only be an empty gesture. i know what i would like to give lola for her birthday. but i made sure that i can't. i still believe lolo's taking care of her. lola's going back to manila in september. i promised her i'd be there, too. it's a tradition related to lolo's death that brings her back. but that's a long time from now.
lola always had a simple practical wisdom in her words. she wasn't even trying to be wise. she was just trying to help. she was being witty. she was giving all she could to extend her love over a phoneline. i wish i could do that. but i guess i can't yet.

since i was a kid, i always believed that Coca-Cola has successfully conquered the world. or maybe that was addiction thinking. more than a liter a meal was the peak of my consumption then, and now i'm trying to tone it down. naah... Coca-Cola did conquer the world...

I have a new toy. One of those rubber figures that expand when soaked in water for a long period of time. Actually I have four. Three of which, I will be taking home with me as gifts. Now I need to test it to see if it really works.
The cardboard says it takes the ten days for the maximum size to be achieved.
Add water...
Now all we need to do now is wait. When I get home, I can try the starfish and the crocodile...
... and see how big it will all get.
